Charles (Charlie) Wilson

Private Charles (Charlie) Mills Wilson

263577 Royal Army Service Corps

Charles Mills Wilson was born in Oldham in 1898 to John and Elizabeth Wilson. In the 1911 Census shows he was the second eldest of seven children and shown to have work as a Roller Coverers Apprentice.

He was not strong, suffering from heart weakness, and succumbed to a cold contracted in training. Charlie died at the Lathom Park Hospital, Ormskirk.

He had been employed by Miss Price as chauffeur at the Cammarch Hotel. During the comparatively short time he lived in Llangammarch he made many friends.

It was reported in the local newspaper that another death had occurred in the ranks of the boys who joined up from Llangammarch. Private Charles Wilson, who joined up only about two months ago, died in camp on the 17th of December 1916.

He was remembered as a man of excellent character, who could always be relied upon, and was a faithful member of the Church choir and always in his place.

A memorial service was held and the Rector, in his sermon, spoke very highly of deceased as one having done his duty nobly, and having given his life for his country. He appealed to the congregation to keep the boys in their minds continually and remember them in their prayers. It was a source of consolation and strength to the boys to know that they were prayed for and remembered at home. The service was fully choral, the special Psalm being the 23rd, and the hymns were "0 Lord of Hosts" (Caleb Simper), 264, 537 and 595 A. and M.

The Last Post was sounded by Trumpet-Major R Hope, Llanwrtyd, who had only just arrived from Egypt.

Miss Evelyn Arthur presided at the organ and at the close played "0 rest in the Lord".
