Evan James Jones

Private Evan James Jones

39775, Welsh Regiment, 3rd Battalion

Evan James Jones was born in Ffosfynnon, between Llanwrtyd and Cefn Gorwydd in 1897 to Mary Jones.

In the 1911 Census he is listed as living with his grandparents Evan (a farm worker) with his mother - also Mary, a household worker. Ffosfynnon as a building, no longer exists.

The regiment (the Welsh Regiment) Evan joined was created in 1881 under the Childers Reforms by the amalgamation of the 41st (Welch) Regiment of Foot and 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot to form the Welsh Regiment. The 3rd Battalion, was effectively a reserve.

The amalgamation explains why Evan was in Lincolnshire for his training. He was taken ill during his training and died in Grantham, Lincolnshire on the 12th February 1916.

His body was brought back to the Gosen Chapel, Cefn Gorwydd for burial.

He is commemorated in St Cadmarch's and in the Gosen Chapel.
